Testing for porosity
There is a simple way you can test your hair’s porosity at home. You just need two things: a glass of water (use a clear glass) and a strand of hair. It is recommended that you try this after washing the product and build-up from your strands to get the most accurate reading. Start by combing your hair to release strands that are shedding, and then take those stands and drop them into your glass of water. Hair that is low porosity will float. Hair that is ‘normal’ porosity will float and then begin to sink slowly. Hair that is high porosity will sink immediately.

Vale Jessica (Chief Jessi-Curl)
On the evening of June 10 2023, with her loving husband, her father, her amazing doctor and dedicated hospice team by her side, Jessica succumbed to her disease peacefully at her home in Southern California. For years Jess has been dealing with a number of serious medical maladies. Earlier this year Jess was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, an aggressive collection of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues with a scarcity of treatment options. We are humbled by the fact that in the time that she was dealing with her diagnosis she was able to witness and be thrilled that her products were becoming available to the Jessicurl Community of the…

Cold water fights frizz
Blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons are all popular methods of styling hair, and every one of them works by using heat to help you achieve the perfect style. But unfortunately, all that heat damages your hair. If you frequently use heat styling tools your hair can become dried out and brittle over time which leads to breakage and frizzy hair. The solution is simple. Rinsing with cold water helps close hair cuticles after your hair is washed. It gives your hair a better chance of staying shiny, healthy and frizz-free. It will also ‘close’ the pores on your scalp, which helps prevent dirt, grease and oil getting in.…

How to achieve maximum definition and curl clumping
Upside down squishing! After shampoo and conditioning flip your head upside down and detangle your hair with your fingers. Apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to your hair along with a couple handfuls of water and scrunch your hair until your frizz is gone and the waves look juicy and are clumping together. This step prepares your waves for styling products. After squishing gently blot your hair with a microfibre towel before applying your styling products. Remain upside down and gently flip your hair to one side, then the other for even product distribution. Now lay a microfibre towel on to a seat and gently lay your hair onto…

Why curlies put off washing their hair.
Wash day can look a little different for everyone and I think when you’re new to embracing your natural wave you have to do a bit of experimenting with products and techniques to find what’s right for you. Waves are a curl pattern, not a texture. Some waves are fine and soft while other waves can be thick and coarse. That’s why there isn’t one miracle product that is perfect for “all wavy people.” The best tip for a successful wash day is to continue to try different techniques and products till you find a combination that makes your hair happy.
